Saturday, May 30th, 2009

At The BBC In the days where being talented is no longer a requisit to be a singer/songwriter, here is a total breath of fresh air from one of the most talented of them all, Paul Weller.
The prententious and talentless Robbie Williams should take a look at this DVD and apologise to everybody for the codswallop he has churned out.
Anyway back to the immensley talented Paul Weller, the DVD is a collection of four TV appearances, 3 live cuts and finishing with a TOTP section. Tracks include the brilliant You Do Something To Me, Changingman, Porcelain Gods, Broken Stones, From The Floorboards Up, Heavy Soul and from the Jam songbook In The City, Down The Tube Station and A Town Called Malice.

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Audrey Hepburn (4 May 1929(1929-05-04) – 20 January 1993) was an English, Dutch actress and humanitarian.

Born in Brussels as Audrey Kathleen Ruston, Hepburn spent her childhood chiefly in the Netherlands, including German-occupied Arnhem, Netherlands during the Second World War (1939-1945). She studied ballet in Arnhem and then moved to London in 1948, where she studied drama and worked as a photographer’s model. She appeared in a handful of European films before starring in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi. Hepburn played the lead female role in Roman Holiday (1953), winning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance. She also won a Tony Award for her performance in Ondine (1954)

Hepburn became one of the most successful film actresses in the world and performed with such notable leading men as Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, William Holden, Fred Astaire, Peter O’Toole, and Albert Finney. She won BAFTA Awards for her performances in The Nun’s Story (1959) and Charade (1963), and received Academy Award nominations for Sabrina (1954), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) and Wait Until Dark.

Gary Williams Street Art - Futurist Girl - Street Art Print

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Gary Williams is a North East based street artist who exhibits lots of work on www.artforurbanspaces.com

Street art is any art developed in public spaces — that is, “in the streets” — though the term usually refers to unsanctioned art, as opposed to government sponsored initiatives. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, stencil graffiti, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing and street installations. Typically, the term Street Art or the more specific Post-Graffiti is used to distinguish contemporary public-space artwork from territorial graffiti, vandalism, and corporate art.

Artists have challenged art by situating it in non-art contexts. ‘Street’ artists do not aspire to change the definition of an artwork, but rather to question the existing environment with its own language. They attempt to have their work communicate with everyday people about socially relevant themes in ways that are informed by esthetic values without being imprisoned by them. John Fekner, a pioneer in urban art, is included in Cedar Lewisohn’s book Street Art: The Graffiti Revolution, which accompanied the 2008 Street Art exhibiton at the Tate Modern in England which Lewisohn was the curator. Fekner is quoted as defining street art as, “all art on the street that’s not graffiti.”

The motivations and objectives that drive street artists are as varied as the artists themselves. There is a strong current of activism and subversion in urban art. Street art can be a powerful platform for reaching the public, and frequent themes include adbusting, subvertising and other culture jamming, the abolishment of private property and reclaiming the streets. Other street artists simply see urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while others may appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated with installing illicit artwork in public places. However the universal theme in most, if not all street art, is that adapting visual artwork into a format which utilizes public space, allows artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised, to reach a much broader audience than traditional artwork and galleries normally allow.
