THE SMITHS REUNION 2009

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has spoken out against speculation that the Manchester band is to reform for a concert next year.

UK TV on Friday claimed that the group were considering reuniting for the Coachella music festival.

Some £2.8 million has reportedly been offered to the band, despite repeated denials from lead singer Morrissey that he would ever perform with Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce again.

Now, a spokesperson for Marr has dismissed the speculation, telling Uncut the reports are “rubbish”.

The Smiths broke up in 1987 when Marr announced that he was leaving the group.

Console yourselves with some classic Morrissey pop art.

David Beckham Art Auction Hong Kong

Friday, November 14th, 2008

David Beckham’s first painting is to be sold at auction at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on Sunday, 16th November. Capitalising on Olympic Games fever, about 70 works on sporting themes by mainly Chinese artists from the collection of sportswear company Adidas will be sold to raise money to support continued relief efforts for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

Beckham’s painting, which is shaped like a goal, tells of his struggle to come back after he received the infamous red card during the 1998 World Cup, and his success in scoring the qualifying goal against Greece in 2001.

“The whole canvas is the idea of the goal,” he says. “There’s the ball in the corner, my celebration, and the words ‘Belief’, ‘Strength’, and ‘Family’, which is what I needed to get through after ‘98.” The painting is estimated to fetch between £5,700 and £7,000.

The Velvet Underground & Nico - Andy Warhol - Released 1967

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Being a lover of pop art what other album cover could I start this new section with other than this Warhol classic.

Warhol pop art

Warhol became the band’s manager in 1965 and went on to design the cover of their first album.

On the original version you could pull away the skin to reveal a pink banana underneath.

The back cover featured a picture of Eric Emerson, who threatened to sue the record label unless he was paid. MGM stopped production, airbrushed him out and stuck black tape over the ones already printed.

Why not suggest your favourite artwork and I will feature it in future articles.
