Monday, May 8th, 2006Is this really old enough to be called old skool? Probably not but a great album non the less.
I’ve owned this since it was released and it is played every time I have friends round.
CD1 mixed by Pete Tong is one of the best compilations around, building from chilled jazzy beats to full on hands in the air.
Thought that this would be hard to find now but just stumbled across it on Amazon.
Perfect for that Summer party. Game for a larrf, sorted.

Friday, May 5th, 2006Come on Phil, what the hell is going on? For the Quadrophenia generation you were an idol. Your “think abart leavin the aarse” lines on Blur’s Parklife album probably added to your reputation. Certainly bringing you to a new audience.
But what are you thinking about with Eastenders. Your argument and subsequent brawl with that “norvern mankey” last week was enough to send Jimmy over the cliff for real. Had to get the Quadrophenia video out to bring back some normality.
Moments In History - The Best Rock Photograph Ever ?!??

Monday, May 1st, 2006
Well, after the saga of actually getting tickets I have looked forward to this date for ages. My next encounter with Stephen Patrick Morrissey that had started way back in 1984 at Glastonbury.
The night started off with a couple of beers in the Pitcher & Piano on the opposite bank of the Tyne.
Normally the bar is full of wannabees and glitterati but tonight they had to share their lair with the be-quiffed bed sit generation who had gate crashed for “a crate ale” before crossing the Millennium Bridge to see their hero.
How many other artists could get such a different reaction from one set of people. Devotion or derision, respect or ridicule it was all there. Surely “that miserable 80’s singer” couldn’t have been the Moz. His lyrics are witty, not miserable, if you want miserable try Leonard Cohen or any of the mass-produced claptrap that was blasting from the speakers.
8.00pm, over the bridge to Newcastle’s newest venue. Surely the best new building in the UK at present and the acoustics are meant to be fantastic.
8.55pm and you’ll never walk alone rings around the arena (surely he won’t play that to the Manc crowds), 9.00pm he’s on stage looking great.
The normally frenetic moshpit at the front appeared to be taken by what Roy Keane would call the “prawn sandwich brigade”. This was obviously not to his liking as he said, “You’re not going to sit all night are you? Stand, stand or leave!”
This was quickly followed by “I hope the venues not to posh for you. Please don’t feel inhibited.”
Well to be honest I think the whole crowd did feel inhibited. The security presence was heavier than it had been for last weeks Tyne / Wear football derby match. Up on level three several people were ejected for use of their mobile phone cameras and at the front only one person got anywhere near the stage due to “The Krays” positioned in front of the stage.
The set list ran as follows:-
First Of The Gang To Die / Still Ill / You Have Killed Me / The Youngest Was The Most Loved / I Will See You In Far-off Places / To Me You Are A Work Of Art / Girlfriend In A Coma / Let Me Kiss You / Reader Meet Author / Life Is A Pigsty / Trouble Loves Me / At Last I Am Born / In The Future When All’s Well / My Life Is An Endless Succession Of People Saying Goodbye / Ganglord / I Just Want To See The Boy Happy / How Soon Is Now?
Morrissey and his band were all on top form throughout but in hindsight it was apparent that the venue was not to his liking.
Highlights being Still Ill (did he really say “England’s a swine” or was that just me), I Will See You In Far Off Places and “Girlfriend In A Coma”.
The later however being started twice as the first time he stopped the band saying “This is a great song, you need to hear it the best it can be played” He is right it is a truly great song by a band who were at the peak of their powers.
Top performance of the night though was “Life’s A Pigsty”, a truly moving experience even eclipsing “How Soon Is Now?”
Other crowd participation from The Moz included his introduction to the band.
“Say hello to Boz Boorer!” We all cheered. “No say hello!” So we all did. “Say hello to Gary Day!” Pure panto with him saying “Very nice” after each crowd reaction.
“ Of course someone had to be Morrissey so I volunteered. I’m regretting it now!” and little did we know at the time he probably was.
10.10pm and the final chords of How Soon Is Now fade and Morrissey bids goodnight.
The crowd wait for the encore and the chants of Morrissey, Morrissey ring around the hall. Still no Moz.
10.15pm, still no Moz and the lights go up. Technicians start to dismantle the stage.
The crowd boo!! and why not? In the words of Johnny Rotten “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated”.
This was a great performance by Moz and the band and one song would have sent the crowd home happy. But no, another show of petulance from an artist who has done it once to often.
I have worshipped this guy for 22 years even after the Bowie and Madstock no shows.
For me he picked the venue, he has a responsibility to make it work. Hopefully over time I will put this to the back of my mind, who wants to remember How Soon Is Now with the image of Morrissey running petulantly off stage instead of him with razor sharp quiff, Marr at his side.
During the gig Morrissey used the word crap, well Moz this was a “crap” ending to a long love affair.
12 years ago we left The City Hall after Morrissey had sung “Shoplifters” in a 70’s Newcastle United top. The stage was invaded that night and the final encore missed. But who cared, that is the way I want to remember my fallen hero.
To top it all this was my 40th birthday present.
